The Lead Chromate Problem in Indian Turmeric
Lead chromate (PbCrO4) is a bright yellow pigment that makes turmeric look more intensely golden. It is toxic, carcinogenic, and illegal as a food additive globally. Yet it has been found in 30-40% of Indian turmeric samples tested by both Indian and US food authorities. A 2023 Stanford University study traced elevated blood lead levels in South Asian immigrant communities directly to regular turmeric consumption.
You cannot detect lead chromate visually or by taste. The only method is lab testing. Woitpure tests every single batch for lead content. Results are below 0.1ppm (well under the 0.2ppm safe limit). The certificate is available on request for any order.
Why Curcumin Percentage Determines Whether Turmeric Actually Works
Curcumin is the primary bioactive compound in turmeric. Clinical studies showing anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and other therapeutic effects typically use extracts standardised to 95% curcumin. In whole powder form, 3%+ curcumin has demonstrated measurable real-world benefit in dietary use. Below 2%, the quantity of powder you would need to eat daily to achieve any effect is nutritionally impractical.
Most commercial turmeric powder falls between 1.5-2.5% curcumin. Woitpure sources Lakadong variety turmeric exclusively from Meghalaya – the highest-curcumin variety grown in India – delivering a guaranteed minimum of 3% curcumin per batch, certified by third-party lab analysis.
- 3%+ curcumin content – Lakadong variety, Meghalaya (certified per batch)
- Zero lead chromate – tested below 0.1ppm before every batch ships

How to Use (Absorption Matters More Than Dose)
Golden Milk (Haldi Doodh): 1 tsp turmeric plus 200ml warm milk plus pinch of black pepper plus 1 tsp ghee. The fat and piperine (from black pepper) increase curcumin absorption by up to 2000%. This is not optional – turmeric consumed without fat and pepper is largely wasted in the digestive tract.
Cooking Technique: Add to hot oil before vegetables or protein. Blooming turmeric in fat activates oil-soluble curcuminoids and releases the full colour and aroma profile. 30-45 seconds in hot fat before adding other ingredients.
Anti-Inflammatory Morning Tonic: 1 tsp turmeric plus 1 tsp ginger powder plus pinch of black pepper in warm water. Daily ritual for joint inflammation, arthritis management, and post-exercise recovery.
