Why Black Sesame Works for Grey Hair – The Actual Mechanism
Premature greying is driven partly by reduced melanocyte activity – the cells that produce melanin pigment in hair follicles. Black sesame contains sesamol and sesamin, two lignans that have demonstrated ability to stimulate tyrosinase – the enzyme melanocytes use to produce melanin. They also protect melanocytes from oxidative stress, a primary cause of their gradual depletion.
Critical fact: sesamol is highly heat-sensitive. Roasting at 160 degrees C destroys up to 70% of sesamol content within minutes. Almost every black sesame product sold commercially is roasted – for taste and shelf life. Ours is not.
Cold-Processing – What It Actually Means
We grind black sesame seeds at temperatures below 40 degrees C using a slow-stone mill. The process takes 3x longer than blade grinding. The result is a fine, dark powder with the full sesamol, sesamin, calcium, and iron profile – everything that makes black sesame therapeutically distinct from white sesame.
- 975mg calcium per 100g – highest of any common food source (vs 120mg in milk)
- 14.6mg iron per 100g
- Sesamol and sesamin fully preserved – cold-processed only
- High in anthocyanins – the black pigment antioxidants
- Zero roasting, zero heat treatment
